Sensei Joseph S. Harrison
Owner, Founder and Head Instructor
“I started HMA not only because of my passion for martial arts, but mainly because I saw a real lack of education, experience, depth of knowledge and wisdom behind too many instructors, teachers and business owners. What separates HMA from so many martial arts schools, instructors and systems is that we are passionate about promoting and developing the individual before any established style or system out there.
This continuing personal development and the refining of personal protection and education is far more important than ego, tradition or any dogma’s which plague martial arts today. The only way to be a great leader in anything is to keep learning. Our students are simply better because of how we care and treat them.“
Originally from Battle Creek, Michigan, Sensei Harrison started his training at an early age with his father in western boxing, and then moved on to learn, study and complete his black belts in traditional systems such as Karate, TaeKwonDo, Hapkido and Judo.
Mr. Harrison has over 25 years experience in more than 18 different systems in the world and has trained with and/or befriended some of the most prominent names in the martial arts today, including but not limited to, Guro Dan Inosanto, Taky Kimura, Andy Kimura, Chris Kent, Richard Bustillo, Cynthia Rothrock, Eric E. Smith, Master Fred Lazo, Jeff Moldovan, Chris Derbaum, Raffy Pambuan, Felix Cortez, Ajarn Chai Sirisute, Louis Krudo, and many more!
In 1993 he discovered his long time instructor, Eric E Smith, and began training in Muay Thai, Judo, JiuJitsu, Jeet Kune Do, Doce Pares Escrima, Kali, and Wing Chun. Since then he has honorably achieved his 4th degree black belt under Sensei Smith and continues to study with him to this day.
In 1998 he relocated to Clearwater, Florida and began training at the Jeet Kune Do Academy-Tampa. In 1999 he met and began training consistently with many top tier martial artists from around the state in Kali/Arnis/Escrima, Silat, JiuJitsu, Capoeira and many others.
